The Story
In Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1, the story opens in pre-colonial coastal Karnataka during the reign of the Kadamba dynasty when the forest of Kantara and its sacred traditions are still unchallenged. A tyrannical ruler from the kingdom of Bangra, King Vijayendra, seeks to exploit the hidden wealth of the Kantara forest — especially the spice garden and divine well under tribal protection. As he trespasses into the sacred land, the forest guardians — the daivas Panjurli Daiva and Guliga Daiva — rise in wrath and kill him. His son, Rajashekara, traumatised by his father’s death, takes the throne and vows that no one shall enter the forest again. Meanwhile, in the tribal hamlet of Kantara, a boy is found emerging from the sacred well and adopted by a tribal woman; he is named Berme. Raised among the forest-people, Berme grows up rooted in their world, yet the conflicts with the kingdom encroach increasingly. The king’s heir, Kulashekara, now grown reckless and arrogant, alongside his sister Kanakavathi, seeks to gain power. Berme ventures beyond the forest to the port city and realises that the precious spices of Kantara are being unfairly traded. He begins cultivating the forest produce to help his people, drawing the ire of the Bangra kingdom. As tensions mount, the palace sends troops to punish the tribe, the forest is burnt, and Berme’s foster mother is killed. In the frenzy, Guliga’s spirit possesses Berme, granting him super-natural strength. Berme leads the tribal resistance; Kanakavathi, it is revealed, has been scheming with dark tribal magic (the Kadapa clan) to trap the daivas and seize their divine power for herself. The Shivalinga in the palace cracks, symbolising the balance between mortal and divine collapsing. In the culminating battle, Berme is possessed by the goddess Chavundi, merges male and female divine forms, defeats Kanakavathi and Kulashekara, and restores order to Kantara. He then disappears into the sacred well, leaving the legend to live on.
