In 1964, paranormal investigators Ed Warren and Lorraine Warren come across a haunted antique mirror at a curiosity shop. When Lorraine touches it, she suffers a terrifying vision of a malevolent entity and her unborn daughter, prompting Ed to rush her to hospital. Lorraine delivers a stillborn daughter, but her prayers appear to bring the baby—eventually named Judy—back to life.
Twenty-two years later, in West Pittston, Pennsylvania, the Jack Smurl family moves into a house that carries the very same mirror. Jack, his wife Janet, his parents Mary and John, and their four daughters begin experiencing escalating supernatural phenomena: heavy objects crashing without cause, disembodied voices, and violent poltergeist attacks. Meanwhile, Judy—now grown—begins suffering psychic episodes and alarming premonitions.
The Warrens, now older and Ed weakened by a heart condition, are reluctant to take on a new case—but Judy’s vision and the Smurl family’s desperation draw them in. They discover that the mirror is not just haunted but the source of the evil: three spirits (a husband who killed his wife and his wife’s mother, and a massive controlling demon) are chained to the object. The demon’s goal is Judy, intending to bind itself through her latent abilities.
As the confrontation escalates, Judy becomes possessed, Ed collapses with a heart attack, and Lorraine fights alone in the basement. Tony Spera, Judy’s fiancé, fights for Lorraine’s life while Ed struggles against his failing body. In a desperate final sequence, Lorraine urges Judy to embrace—not deny—her psychic gift. Together they place their hands on the mirror during Ed’s exorcism prayers; Judy confronts the entity directly with “You’re not there,” triggering the mirror’s destruction and the demon’s defeat. The house falls silent. The Smurl family survives three more years in peace and the broken mirror becomes part of the Warrens’ artifact collection. The story ends with Judy’s wedding, Lorraine’s vision of a long future together and Ed and Lorraine finally allowing themselves hope for peace.
