The Story

The story opens with Jassi Singh Randhawa, a cheerful Punjabi man, who has spent years waiting in India for his UK visa so he can join his wife and children abroad. When he finally obtains the visa and lands in the UK, he is greeted not by celebration, but by a shocking divorce notice — his wife wants to end the marriage. Reeling from this betrayal, Jassi is stranded in an unfamiliar country and emotionally adrift. Around the same time, Rabia, who runs a wedding-dance troupe along with her step-daughter Saba and a quirky ensemble of friends, is burdened by her husband’s abandonment and financial troubles. Saba is in love with Goggi, the son of a stern and patriotic Punjabi businessman-turned-gangster, Raja Sandhu, who will only approve the match if the bride comes from a “respectable” (Indian) background. Because Saba is Pakistani by birth, this approval seems impossible. In a moment of inspiration (or desperation), Rabia ropes in Jassi to pose as her husband—claiming him to be a retired war hero—and pretend to be Saba’s father in order to win Raja’s favour. Jassi, still raw from his own personal crisis, agrees, and thus enters a bizarre world of deception: he must juggle his own grief with the façade of being a decorated Indian Colonel, maintain the charade in front of Raja and his suspicious brothers, and ensure that the wedding goes ahead so Saba and Goggi can be together. As the scheme unfolds, Jassi and Rabia’s relationship deepens: what started as a convenience becomes emotionally complicated. Meanwhile, Raja’s brothers Titu and Tony, along with Raja himself, probe Jassi’s background and threaten to expose the ruse. The mix of cultures (Indian-Punjabi, Pakistani, UK setting), the wedding chaos, the gangster father, the masquerade of identity, all combine into a string of comedic misadventures, near-escapes, and revelations. In the end, Jassi is forced to confront his own worth—beyond the mask of the “war hero” he pretended to be—and decide what he wants: to reclaim his dignity, his sense of purpose, and perhaps a new life beyond his broken marriage. The final act sees the various sub-plots converge—Jassi’s real emotional journey, the acceptance of Saba’s identity, the true recognition of Rabia’s strength—resulting in a climax where truth, identity and love all collide. The wedding goes ahead, truths are revealed, and Jassi emerges not merely as the fake hero he pretended to be, but as someone who has grown, taken charge, and found a new path.
