The Story
Mia is a Scottish doctor whose career and personal life are both unraveling — she is battling addiction and sidelined from the profession she once held in pride. She accepts an invitation to travel to New Zealand for her estranged sister’s wedding, hoping it might offer distance and a fresh start. Upon arrival in the remote mountain-village community she finds not a celebration but tragedy: her sister is dead, apparently before the wedding could take place. Stunned by grief and guilt, Mia stays on, drawn into the small town’s tight-knit social fabric and its brittle façade of normality. While the community appears serene, Mia senses the undercurrents of tension: rumor and denial around her sister’s death, suspicion toward outsiders, a quiet but deep rift between environmentalists and the indigenous First People of the land, and the unspoken histories of this rugged landscape. Further complicating matters is Mia’s growing attraction to her late sister’s fiancé, Ewan, which both grounds and unsettles her in equal measure. As she digs into her sister’s last days, Mia uncovers a web of deceit and hidden relationships: her sister may have been involved in activism, may have discovered something the town was desperate to suppress, and might not have died simply by accident. With her own professional misconduct under investigation back home in Scotland, Mia’s determination to find the truth becomes personal: not just for justice for her sister, but for redemption for herself. The closer she gets to the truth, the more dangerous the quiet community becomes — loyalties shift, the landscape becomes menacing rather than comforting, and Mia must decide how far she will go to expose what really happened, while also confronting her own demons.
