Maalik

Storyline

“Maalik” (2021), directed by Mahesh Narayanan and starring Fahadh Faasil, is a sprawling, politically charged drama that meticulously chronicles the life and times of Sulaiman Ali, a charismatic and enigmatic leader of Ramadapally, a fictional coastal Muslim community in Kerala. Told through a compelling non-linear narrative, the film opens with Sulaiman's arrest and subsequent imprisonment, as his past unfolds in a series of intricate flashbacks spanning decades, revealing the events that led him to this point. The heart of “Maalik” lies in the steadfast bond and unique way of life of the Ramadapally community, a harmonious mix of Muslims and Christians who have coexisted for generations, their livelihoods intrinsically intertwined with the sea. Sulaiman, a man of quiet strength and unwavering resolve, emerges as their natural protector, guiding them through various struggles against external forces – primarily government projects and corporate interests that threaten to displace them and exploit their land for a proposed port. His journey traces from a rebellious youth, challenging local thugs and police, to a respected patriarch who commands fierce loyalty and orchestrates powerful resistance movements. The film delves deep into the devastating consequences of these power struggles, particularly highlighting a tragic incident where a police crackdown on a peaceful protest escalates into violence, resulting in the loss of innocent lives. This pivotal event, fueled by political machinations and communal incitement, is brilliantly depicted as a meticulously orchestrated “riot,” where the truth is systematically distorted to demonize the community and justify state repression. “Maalik” masterfully dissects how narratives are weaponized and how communal tensions can be manufactured for political gain, exposing the deep-seated corruption and manipulation at play within the system. As Sulaiman grapples with his past from behind bars, the film also explores his complex relationships – with his resilient wife Roselyn (Nimisha Sajayan), his childhood friend and confidante David (Vinay Forrt), and the young, idealistic police officer Anwar (Joju George) whose investigation holds the key to uncovering the true events. “Maalik” is not just a personal saga; it's a powerful indictment of systemic injustice, a poignant portrayal of a community fighting for its identity and existence, and a profound exploration of leadership, sacrifice, and the enduring quest for truth in a world rife with deception. Its epic scope, gripping performances, and unflinching social commentary make it a significant and impactful cinematic experience.
