The Story
ere Ishk Mein centers on Shankar, a volatile and emotionally wounded individual whose life is marked by anger, conflict and unresolved trauma, and Mukti, a determined research scholar studying behavioural change. The film opens by showing Shankar in a present-day situation where his behaviour has serious consequences — he is an Indian Air Force pilot dealing with professional setbacks because of his refusal to follow orders. This triggers a psychological evaluation, bringing him back into contact with Mukti, who years earlier had chosen him as the subject of her academic research into whether a violent person can change. Through a series of flashbacks, the narrative reveals how Mukti first meets Shankar during his college days. At that time, Shankar is angry, unruly and known for his aggressive tendencies, while Mukti is pursuing an ambitious academic thesis that argues even the most tumultuous minds can be reformed. Believing her research will be validated through real-world engagement, Mukti involves Shankar in her work, initially presenting their interactions as purely academic. As they spend more time together, the line between research and emotional involvement blurs — Shankar begins to fall deeply in love with her, despite her initial resistance and insistence that their connection is part of her study. Their relationship intensifies the deeper they venture into one another’s vulnerabilities, exposing buried pain, unmet desires, and conflicting expectations. As the story progresses, the couple faces intense emotional struggles — moments of passion, misunderstanding, rupture and reconciliation that shape their individual evolutions. Mukti’s own journey forces her to confront her motivations and the psychological toll of her choices, while Shankar grapples with the destructive impact of his anger and his yearning for connection and acceptance. Events eventually lead both characters into tragic territory; culminating in a heartbreaking sequence where Shankar, now an Air Force pilot, makes the ultimate sacrifice by crashing his aircraft in a selfless act tied intimately to their shared history and Mukti’s own fate. Ultimately, both lovers’ paths converge in a poignant and solemn resolution that binds love and loss together, echoing the crushing intensity of their tumultuous bond and the enduring impact of their shared experiences.

Bhooma Devi arrives in Hyderabad to pursue her MA in English, optimistic and eager to embrace a fresh chapter of life. In her first week she meets Vikram, a computer engineering student whose charm and confidence draw her in; their flirtation quickly blossoms into a full-blown relationship. At first, their courtship seems typical of young love—the shared classes, the laughter at coffee break, the closely held notes passed between desks. But as time passes, Vikram’s attitude begins to shift. What started as sweetness becomes possessiveness. His jokes about gender roles turn sharp, his suggestions about what Bhooma should wear or whom she should meet become instructions. Suddenly, Bhooma’s father refuses to grant permission for her outings, her friends drift away under Vikram’s subtle demands, and her grades slip because she’s distracted by the weight of being someone’s “ideal girlfriend.” Behind the scenes, Vikram exploits the perception of being a loving partner while methodically eroding her independence. He dismisses her concerns as over-sensitivity, applauds her when she complies, and withdraws when she doesn’t. Bhooma finds herself in a literal foam-pit at a college game, unable to climb out—not because of chance, but because she’s frozen by fear and the knowledge that “being good” isn’t enough. Eventually, isolated and trapped, she realizes that the relationship isn’t uplifting—it’s limiting. Her turning point comes when she sees her father’s disappointment and recognizes the mirror of her own reflection cracking. She confronts Vikram in front of their peers, telling him that love does not require obedience. When he refuses to change, she walks away—quietly, resolutely. In the aftermath, Bhooma reclaims her friendships, refocuses her studies, and begins giving tours on her terms, offering visitors the choice to see beauty or complexity in the world. Though Vikram remains part of her past, she no longer lets his narrative define her future.
