Set approximately 90 years before the events of 'Game of Thrones', during a time when the Targaryen dynasty still holds the Iron Throne, 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' follows the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall, a formidable but naive hedge knight, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Their story begins in the dusty fields of Ashford Meadow, where they journey to compete in a grand tourney. Dunk, a man of humble origins and immense stature, dreams of earning his spurs and making a name for himself, though he possesses little more than his wits, a sturdy horse, and a borrowed suit of armor. Egg, a bold and perceptive boy, harbors a secret: he is none other than Prince Aegon Targaryen, a future king, traveling incognito to learn about the common folk and the true state of the realm. Their path quickly becomes fraught with peril when Dunk is forced to confront Prince Aerion 'the Brightflame' Targaryen, a cruel and arrogant royal, after Aerion assaults a puppeteer and her squire. This confrontation leads to a high-stakes trial by seven, where Dunk must find seven champions to fight by his side against Aerion's royal retinue. The trial sees him unexpectedly supported by some of Westeros's most powerful figures, including Prince Baelor Breakspear and Prince Maekar Targaryen, Egg's father. Despite the challenges and the overwhelming odds, Dunk's honor and courage shine through, forging an unbreakable bond with Egg. Following the tourney's dramatic conclusion, Dunk and Egg embark on a meandering journey across the Seven Kingdoms, encountering various lords, knights, and commoners, navigating political intrigue, and striving to uphold the ideals of chivalry in a world often devoid of it. Their adventures promise to unveil a nuanced picture of Westeros before its ultimate downfall, focusing on the intimate struggles and growth of a seemingly mismatched pair destined for greatness.
