The Story

120 Bahadur dramatizes one of the most heroic and tragic episodes of the 1962 Sino-Indian War — the Battle of Rezang La — where a greatly outnumbered Indian platoon stood its ground against overwhelming odds. In the late autumn of 1962, tensions along the high-altitude Himalayan frontier escalate as Chinese forces push into Indian territory, targeting strategic positions in the Ladakh region with the aim of breaking through to the vital Chushul airfield. A small contingent of the Charlie Company, 13th Kumaon Regiment, consisting of just 120 Indian soldiers, is tasked with defending the barren, windswept heights of Rezang La under bitter cold and near-impossible conditions. Led with quiet resolve, this band of men realizes early on that retreat is not an option; their mission is to delay the enemy advance and protect their comrades in the valley below. As the Chinese troops — numbering in the thousands — begin their assault, the Indian defenders endure relentless artillery barrages, brutal hand-to-hand combat and crippling casualties. Throughout the battle, individual acts of courage and self-sacrifice emerge as soldiers take positions, fire relentlessly, and rally each other when hope seems lost. Despite having limited ammunition and no reinforcements, they hold their lines, inflicting heavy casualties and frustrating repeated Chinese advances. The narrative portrays the brutality of mountain warfare — freezing temperatures, blinding snow, exhaustion and the constant threat of being overrun — alongside the unwavering commitment of the defenders to their duty. In the end, almost all of the 120 Bahadurs fall in combat, but their resistance delays the enemy and preserves a critical tactical advantage for the Indian Army, exemplifying the profound cost of bravery in the face of impossible odds. The film concludes by reflecting on the sacrifices of those soldiers whose names and deeds became a testament to endurance and courage during one of India’s most difficult wartime moments.
