The Story

Saira Khan, a Muslim woman from Baku, Azerbaijan, relocates to India with her husband Hanif and their four children. Initially it appears to be a settled family life, but everything unravels when Hanif suddenly pronounces a triple talaq — divorcing Saira unilaterally — and proceeds to assert his right to multiple marriages, thereby isolating Saira from their children (including their sons) and stripping away her independence and dignity. The film follows Saira’s ordeal as she endures not just the divorce but also the legal and societal backlash that comes with it—her husband’s second (or additional) marriage, the denial of her access to her children, and the challenge of confronting both religious personal law and India’s secular judicial system. Determined not to acquiesce, Saira enlists the help of an advocate (Gauri) and brings her fight into court, demanding the right to her children, recognition of her rights as a wife and mother, and justice in a system stacked against her. The movie depicts her emotional journey—her despair, outrage, resolve—as well as the procedural labyrinth of the legal system, the pressure of community norms, and the clash between tradition and individual rights. Through hearings, evidence, confrontations and the trauma of alienation, Saira ultimately pushes her case to a verdict that mirrors the real-life landmark judgment adjudicated by Judge Swati Chauhan (on whose case the film is based). The narrative does not simply present a courtroom drama, but also traces Saira’s inner transformation—from passive victim to active agent—while exposing the abuse of triple talaq, the denial of custody rights, the problem of polygamy within the personal law framework, and the collision between religious custom and constitutional justice. Despite the numerous obstacles—legal loopholes, social stigma, patriarchal inertia—Saira persists, and the film closes with the recognition that her fight is not only for herself but for many others in her position, even as she must live with the consequences of her decisions and the scars of her struggle.
