Final Destination

Storyline

While preparing for a senior trip to Paris, teenager Alex Browning boards Volée Airlines Flight 180 with his classmates. Just before takeoff, Alex experiences a vivid premonition of the plane exploding moments after liftoff, killing everyone on board. Panicked, he causes a commotion, leading to him and several others being removed from the flight: his best friend Tod Waggner, Tod's sister Clear Rivers, jock Carter Horton and his girlfriend Terry Chaney, teacher Valerie Lewton, and fellow student Billy Hitchcock. From the terminal, they watch in horror as Flight 180 indeed explodes exactly as Alex foresaw. Initially, the survivors try to move on, but Alex becomes increasingly paranoid, convinced that Death itself is now coming for them, picking them off in the order they would have died on the plane. His theory gains traction when Tod dies in a gruesome 'suicide' that Alex believes was orchestrated by an unseen force. Subsequent 'accidents' claim Terry, who is hit by a bus, and Ms. Lewton, who dies in a fiery house explosion. Alex, along with Clear, delves into research, realizing that by surviving the plane crash, they disrupted Death's grand design, and Death is now 'recalibrating' to reclaim those lives. They desperately try to decipher the clues left behind by Death, which seem to manifest as subtle environmental signals leading up to each deadly event. Their attempts to warn the others are met with skepticism and fear. Alex realizes that saving someone from their intended death only postpones it or shifts the order, as Death will always find a way. After Carter nearly dies in a train accident and Billy is decapitated by a flying piece of metal from the same incident, Alex deduces that the only way to cheat Death is to interrupt the chain of events by causing a new, unplanned death. He tries to sacrifice himself to save Clear, thinking it will break the cycle. He manages to save Clear from a collapsing structure in the plane's old wreckage site, seemingly dying in an explosion. However, he is revived, having survived the blast, and for a period, it appears they have finally beaten Death. Three months later, Alex, Clear, and Carter are in Paris, reflecting on their ordeal. Carter mockingly asks if they are truly safe. Just as he says this, a falling sign almost hits Alex. Carter pushes Alex out of the way, but a large, swinging sign then fatally strikes Carter, revealing that Death's design was merely postponed, not defeated, and its relentless pursuit continues.
