Storyline

In the year 10191, Duke Leto Atreides of the planet Caladan is ordered by the Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV to relocate his House to Arrakis, a harsh desert planet and the only source of 'spice', a vital psychedelic substance for interstellar travel. Though outwardly an honor, Leto suspects it is a trap orchestrated by the Emperor in collusion with House Harkonnen, the Atreides' ancestral enemies who previously managed Arrakis and profit immensely from the spice. Paul, Leto's son, is plagued by prophetic visions of a holy war and a mysterious Fremen girl. His mother, Lady Jessica, a Bene Gesserit, has trained Paul in their mental and physical disciplines. Upon arrival on Arrakis, they find a desolate world inhabited by the indigenous Fremen people and giant sandworms. The Atreides forces begin to uncover Harkonnen sabotage and the brutal methods previously employed to extract spice. Leto attempts to forge an alliance with the Fremen by showing respect for their culture and seeking their leader, Stilgar. However, the Harkonnen trap is sprung, aided by a traitor within House Atreides, Dr. Wellington Yueh. The Harkonnens, supported by the Emperor's elite Sardaukar soldiers, launch a devastating surprise attack, overwhelming the Atreides forces. Duke Leto is captured and dies in a failed attempt to assassinate Baron Harkonnen using a poisoned tooth, as arranged by Yueh. Paul and Jessica manage to escape into the deep desert, pursued by Harkonnen troops. They are forced to confront the harsh environment, the sandworms, and their own vulnerability. After a perilous journey, they eventually encounter a group of Fremen led by Stilgar, including Chani, the girl from Paul's visions. Paul is challenged to a duel by a Fremen named Jamis and, against Jessica's advice, kills him, earning him a place among the Fremen. Accepting his path as a potential messianic figure known as the Lisan al Gaib, Paul resolves to learn the ways of the Fremen and lead them against the Harkonnens and the Empire.
